Terra Madre Brazil
More than 500 small farmers, breeders, fishers and food producers representing fifty food communities from across Brazil are meeting this weekend at the second national gathering of their Terra Madre network, to discuss the issues facing them and strengthen their collaborative efforts. Since it was launched in 2004, the alliance has grown steadily, and today also involves many cooks, academics, youth and artists in the fight to preserve and protect sustainable food production and Brazil’s gastronomic heritage.
Held over March 19 – 22 at the FUNARTE cultural complex in Brasilia, the Terra Madre Brazil meeting is focused on giving an opportunity to participants to discuss issues important to their livelihood, the environment and the health of their communities in themed workshops. They will be joined by around 200 observers, representing local institutions and NGOs, as well as food industry professionals and journalists, to widen the discussion.
Various other activities will be held over the four-day event to introduce the public to these themes and their work: taste education workshops for adults and children, a sensory activity trail, culinary demonstrations by Terra Madre cooks and talks and seminars on food quality, sustainable production and agricultural biodiversity.
A Biodiversity Market will be set up outside the venue, where visitors can taste and purchase products from Brazilian food communities, and from producers of the 15 Ark of Taste and 9 Presidia projects which have been established by Slow Food to support producers of unique products across the country. The program also includes a range of cultural activities connected with food, such as exhibitions, feature films, music, theatre and dance.
